Melt Banana @ The Waiting Room
w/ Beep Beep & The Show Is The Rainbow
To those of you who I dragged to see these guys last time: Is this show fucking worth hyping or what?
This has to be one of the weirdest reproductive behaviors to have ever evolved, followed closely by the gorilla mask. Stick with me here, this is amazing.
Many insects compete ferociously for the proliferation of their genes. I will rank some good examples starting with the most sensible and quickly moving to the most brutal.
5. Male damselflies grab on to a female's "neck" with their "tail" after depositing the sperm. This is so he can keep an eye on her and any other males that may want to make a switcharoo with their own seed.
4. Male silverfish deposit their sperm on a stalk and physically move the female to it until she sits on it. He will probably stick around to make sure she doesn't eject it and eat it.
3. Male dragonflies evolved a glue (mating plug) that is secreted after insemination that seals up the female's reproductive cavity. It lasts just long enough to ensure fertilization, then it breaks down.
2. Male Dragonflies later evolved... wait for it...Penis Shovels, which are used for scooping out the glue.
1. What's better than a Penis Shovel? A Penis Sword. Male bedbugs compete so viciously for mates that they have done away with the old school methods. They ignore the genital opening and stab the female directly in the abdomen. (Traumatic Insemination) It's a real wonder that this even works! Eggs should not be able to develop there and the wound should be fatal, but of course they evolved a process to deal with it.
I told myself that I would try not to lecture like this when I got to Lincoln, but can you look me in the eye and say that isn't fascinating stuff? If so, I'll stop.

So, for some reason (Cell Biology) I haven't made a post on this site for like two months. I will try to make this a good one. Natalie and I rented a fire ring at the mutha fuckin' pumpkin patch. We're going this Monday and all are invited. Frank did this last year and it rooled. We're going to show up around 4 or 5, which is kind of early for a lot of you, but I don't want to miss that fucking dragon again. That hurt. I wish I had pics from last year. Did anyone take pictures? If so, please post.

My little sister has been working on her senior project, which addressed discrimination against women in the music industry. The culmination of that project is the charity concert she is hosting tomorrow at Sokol Underground. Proceeds benefit the YWCA.

This was certainly an eye opener for me. I can't understand why this isn't regulated tighter. Perhaps Obama will be addressing it soon?

- It was found at every recent school shooting
- It is a major component of acid rain
- Thousands die each year after inhaling it
Sweet! I just hope they capitalize on it and tour their asses off this summer. Congrats guys. Well deserved.

I've been researching a classic rock band named FOCUS and they've really been blowing my mind. They fall somewhere between Jethro Tull and King Crimson.
I regularly check Craig's List for arcade machines and stumbled across a few cool deals that I thought I'd share.
Let it be known that I am looking for a Neo-Geo arcade machine, a good top-down shooter, or a reasonably priced pinball fixer upper... just in case any of you know about any of these for sale somewhere.
Looks like The Digz in Millard (owned by Gamers) is selling off a bunch of good, working machines.
Frogger - $450
Pole Position - $400
Tekken 3 - $350
Double Dragon - $700
Super Hang On - $300

...doesn't it conflict with the spirit of a house show? David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) is on a house show tour (which not only stops in Omaha but is sold out). He books your house and sells the tickets on his website for 20 bucks. Sure, the head of the house gets 5 tickets to their own house though. It's a very creative strategy on his part and I'm sure he's making more money than he would the traditional way, but I can't help but feel like this is totally fucked up. Do people pay $20 to see him play in a club?

Some of you have heard about this, but for those who haven't, there have been rumblings about Pabst discontinuing Old Style. Considering the inevitable price hike, I kind of feel like they are.

Old Style. Literally.
The beer brand familiar to generations of Chicagoans is returning to a process it started with in the 1900s and abandoned in the '90s...
"It's something our longtime consumers have asked us to take a look at," said Kevin Kotecki, president of Woodridge-based Pabst Brewing Co., which acquired the brand in 1999...
The brewing change will push Old Style into the more costly premium category of Coors, Miller and Budweiser. Among several brands Pabst has recently focused on propping, Old Style is now in a subpremium category with the likes of Busch, Keystone Light and Pabst Blue Ribbon.
